Prokofiev and Euro 2012

So the theme music to Euro 2012 on ITV is a variation on a theme of Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf.

I loved Peter and the Wolf when I was small. We had an album of the music with Richard Baker narrating the story. The children’s introduction to the orchestra was also on the album. We never listened to that bit.  (Boring). But we loved being scared by the big bad wolf. And the Peter theme from the piece whisks me back to 1970s Tooting faster than you can say Spangles.

Which got me thinking about football and music. Not the ‘blue is the colour, football is the game’ variety. But the grand old tradition of crowd chanting. I finally got around to googling a question that has bugged me for years. To find that yes, the crowd really is singing The White Stripes.

If only I could love football even half as much as I love that song.
